Summary |
World War II was the largest, most destructive conflict mankind has ever known. Decisive battles played out across the globe. Many of these operations have been misinterpreted, lost in the fog of war or consumed by the landscape. Using remote-sensing techniques, the series investigates the traces of battles left behind and uncovers forgotten remains underwater and hidden scars on land -- Pearl Harbor: Pete and Marty visit Oahu and use their 21st century technology to reveal unknown elements of the Japanese attack in December of 1941 -- Hitler's Killer Rocket: Scientists study the German V-2 rocket program, including visiting test and production sites in Germany and an excavation of a target site in rural England -- The Battle That Won the Pacific War: 1942: the Japanese have swept through the Pacific. The rays of the rising sun creep towards Australia. The Allies' last hope is to stand and fight in some of the most inhospitable terrain in the world. Marty and Pete investigate submerged fighter planes, discover networks of tunnels, and travel to a lost battlefield that has remained hidden for 80 years. |
America's Bloodiest Battle: In 1944-1945, the advancing United States army enters the Hurtgen Forest on the border of Germany. The program examines the defenses the Germans used to attack the invading army -- Island Under Siege: Marty and Pete visit the island of Malta to see how the people there survived during World War II -- Bloody Road to Rome: In Italy, the Allies' attempt to quickly injure the 'soft underbelly' of Axis Europe became a bruising and exhausting encounter. Marty and Pete use scanning technology to locate the remains of a formidable German defensive line, investigate the site of one of America's worst military disasters, and question why an ancient monastery was destroyed. |
